Kamm on Atzmon's reply

UK blogger and columnist Oliver Kamm reacts to Gilad Atzmon's reply [PDF] to my column [PDF] in Jazz Times.

Kamm also directs our attention to this piece at Al-Jazeerah, in which Atzmon endorses Iranian president Ahmadinejad's call to wipe Israel off the map:

This isn’t to say that the Israeli people should be wiped out. As far as I am concerned, President Ahmadinejad was clearly referring to the state of Israel rather than its people.

"Clearly"? How was this clear? Atzmon continues:

Considering the crimes committed by the Zionist state, this is rather a fair and legitimate political comment.

We're left to wonder whether Atzmon thinks, say, Sudan should be wiped off the map, "considering the crimes committed by the [Sudanese] state." Or the Iranian or Iraqi state for that matter.

well david, seems like the proofreader over at Jazz Times had some problems. I have the original letter Atzmon sent (he sent me a copy to look at) and where he wrote Anti-Semite, they printed Anti-Zionist.

Either you handed them a manipulated letter, or the magazine made a pretty significant error which changes the sense, and of course Kamm would comment on it. But he is commenting on a mistake, and you know this as well.

Jazz Times forwarded me Atzmon's text in the form he sent it. The passage under dispute reads "anti-Zionist."

Your charge that I "handed [Jazz Times] a manipulated letter" is patently absurd, as Atzmon did not send the letter to me. He sent it to the magazine.

why not publish the letter here that you got from Jazz Times then?

This is the exact wording of the original letter: "In order to brand me a racist and anti-Zionist you must do better that quote Oliver Kamm, who as a Zionist and a supporter of the war in Iraq is naturally opposed to me."
