As I've already argued, Ayers and his comrades did incalculable long-term damage to the civil rights and antiwar movements with their pro-totalitarian antics. The answer to the McCain-Palin sleaze campaign is not to support Bill Ayers — it is to defend Barack Obama against the lie that he shares Ayers's nincompoop politics.

Inevitably, a "Support Bill Ayers" website has sprung up, with over a thousand academics signing on to a statement that Ayers "participated passionately in the civil rights and antiwar movements of the 1960s, as did hundreds of thousands of Americans." Matt Yglesias and Michael Tomasky strenuously object, and good for them.

Thank you - Ayers and Dohrn are disgusting, and it's unbelievable that they did not spend significant time in prison for their crimes. The idea that academics are saying that we should support them now is simply astonishing. (I speak as an Obama supporter and Democrat).
